The first HMS Euryalus was launched in 1803 and played a notable role in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, which was a decisive naval battle during the Napoleonic Wars. Euryalus served as the flagship of Admiral Lord Nelson’s second-in-command, Vice-Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, during the battle. The ship played a key role in engaging and capturing several French and Spanish warships, and was heavily engaged in the fighting.
In addition to the Battle of Trafalgar, HMS Euryalus saw action in other naval engagements during the Napoleonic Wars, including the Battle of Cape Finisterre and the Battle of San Domingo. After the Napoleonic Wars, Euryalus served in various capacities, including as a training ship and a dispatch vessel.
A second HMS Euryalus was launched in 1853, which served during the Crimean War, participating in the Siege of Sevastopol and other actions in the Black Sea. This second Euryalus also saw service in the Baltic during the Russian War, as well as in the Mediterranean and other regions.
The name “Euryalus” has also been used for other ships in the Royal Navy throughout history, including a World War II cruiser and a modern-day Type 23 frigate. The name has been associated with a tradition of distinguished naval service and has a significant place in British naval history.
